Often mascara can flake off during the day when our lashes touch glasses lenses. We look at how to prevent mascara smudging and smearing, as well as how to stop mascara flaking off during the day. We found the best non-smudge tips for you to achieve smudge proof mascara!

Last week we chatted with Matilda at Matilda Fry Makeup Artistry. Her best tips for creating smudge proof mascara for optical wearers is to master the eyelash curler! Once refining this skill, it will add a new emphasis to an everyday natural look. Tilly says “I love curling to create dramatic lashes for a night out. This is much more comfortable than a night of false lashes touching lenses all night!”. Always curl lashes first, then apply mascara. Applying the curl after mascara can cause eyelashes to stick to the curler and break!

I’ve taken advice from YouTuber Lisa Eldridge, curling lashes away from the lenses stops flaking and unwanted black marks. Along with curling, make sure to use a creamy or waterproof formula mascara that holds a curl in place.

How To Curl Lashes

Referring to YouTuber Wayne Goss’ Makeup video, the main steps for mastering eyelash curling are:

  • Use a good quality curler
  • Start at the base of the lashes. Firmly press the curler onto the lashes. Gently rotate the curler backwards towards the forehead. This encourages a stronger curl.
  • Be careful not to “bend” the lashes too much when curling, this can create a dent.
  • Continue to curl along the mid-lengths and tips of the lashes

How To Wear Waterproof Mascara

If you still haven’t achieved a smudge proof mascara, use a waterproof mascara. Waterproof is oil based and can hold curls for longer, as opposed to a water-based mascara. Be sure to remove with makeup remover, waterproof mascara won’t remove with water like normal mascara can!

Be sure to throw out mascaras after three months, products tend to flake easier after this time. Using mascara for too long can run the risk of bacterial infection if used for longer!

Hopefully, you can use a few of these tips in your everyday routine, we would love to know your best tips!
